One of the many joys of worm life that I think you humans are really missing out on is the ritual of dining in the dark. So many sights pull you away from the moment you’re having at the table: the noisy nearby tables, servers and bussers speed-walking to and fro, that one crumb on your friend’s chin from the appetizer but now its been fifteen minutes since the appetizer was finished and you’re wondering if it’s been there too long to call it out but you don’t want to embarrass them…all equally classic dining distractions. Why not elevate your experience by heightening your senses of taste and smell with dining in the dark!
A short drive from Gwinnett gets you to the Commerce Club in Atlanta, a high-end, high-rise club near the top of the Peachtree Tower. Once or twice a month, the club is home to the Dining in the Dark experience, where guests are blindfolded and given a secret menu with appetizers, entrees and desserts for a unique 90-minute meal. If you’re worried about allergies or dietary specifications, don’t worry! In addition to asking for any dietary requirements you may have, the experience lets you choose from three different menus: red for meat, blue for seafood and green for vegan.
As your menu of choice is brought out course-by-course, you and your friends will experience a unique meal driven only by your taste buds, giving a new depth to each new bite. Without your eyes leading you to connect this meal to others you’ve had in the past, you’re able to pick apart the flavors of each bite as if trying everything for the first time again. If you’re looking for a quick drink to prepare your palate before diving into the dark, the experience includes an invitation to a happy hour event right before dinner.
In this time of year when humans take stock of their lives, making resolutions for the future and celebrating relationships with loved ones, it can be easy to lose sight of that sense of wonder we feel when encountering something new. So, this year, why not get out ahead of life? Don’t lose sight, just…give it up for a night and try something new. It may pale in comparison to the dining experience of a worm, but hey…we don’t have health codes, so let’s call it even.
