Never Have I Ever: Donated to an Animal Shelter

’Tis the season of giving and if you’re anything like me, you probably have your own festive traditions that make this time of year feel extra special. My family’s tradition was always the annual toy drive. We would pick a name off the Christmas tree, head to the store and spend what felt like hours curating the perfect gift. I’d imagine the kid’s face lighting up as they tore through the wrapping paper—pure magic. That tradition filled my heart every December.

Growing up, my house was always full of animals, from furry dogs and cats to scaly lizards and everything in between. There was always a wagging tail, a soft purr or a quiet scuttle somewhere around the house, and yes, probably a few chewed shoes too. This year, something shifted. Maybe it’s because I got my own puppy earlier this year, or maybe I’ve just grown a little softer for those four-legged friends. Either way, I realized there’s a whole group out there who could use some holiday love too—our shelter pets, who could really use a little extra cheer.

So in a playful twist on my old giving tradition, I decided to channel my inner Santa Paws. I started looking into what local animal shelters needed and discovered a treasure trove of wish lists. The staff and furry residents at Gwinnett County Animal Welfare & Enforcement could really use some help and it doesn’t take much. We’re talking everyday items like towels, fleece blankets, dish soap and leashes. They’re not glamorous, but oh-so necessary.

For the pets themselves, treats, toys, peanut butter (because, duh) and cozy bedding go a long way. Everything you’d want if you were a pup waiting for your forever home or a cat dreaming of endless naps on someone’s couch. Even the smallest donations can make a huge impact and brighten a furry friend’s holiday more than you might imagine.

This holiday season, I’m mixing things up. I’m still spreading joy to little hearts in all shapes and sizes, but I’m also bringing smiles to a few wagging tails and purring friends. It’s a new kind of tradition, one that’s full of joy, fur and maybe a little slobber—okay, sometimes a lot of slobber. Because let’s face it, the holidays are better when everyone, two-legged or four, is feeling loved.

You can drop off donations at the Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center and check their website for the full wish list. Trust me, even one small gift can make a pawsitive impact and you might just get a tail wag or purr in return.
