Day Trip: Lake Oconee, Distance: 70 miles, one-hour drive

By

Ready for the ultimate lakeside escape? Located just 75 miles from Atlanta is Georgia’s second largest lake, Lake Oconee. If adventure is what you are looking for, spend the day on the 19,000 acre lake just soaking in the sun. You can rent a jet ski or boat and explore at your own pace or you can have a captain take you out for a sunset cruise, where your only responsibility is to sit back, relax, and take in the natural beauty that surrounds you. Lake Oconee is an angler’s paradise boasting more fish per square acre than any other lake in Georgia. The lake itself is enough to keep you busy for your entire stay but there are several other attractions you won’t want to miss while you are here.

Downtown Greensboro is rich in southern hospitality and charm. Main Street is lined with people walking in and out of antique shops, galleries and boutiques smiling at each other as they pass by. If history interests you, then the Old Gaol is a must-see. Built in 1807, the building has remained virtually unchanged with its castellated roof-life, sloping stone walls, and fortress-like appearance. It is believed to be the oldest existing jail structure in the state. After shopping and taking in a history lesson, make sure you stop by the Yesterday Cafe for lunch or dinner and try their famous buttermilk pie. To end your time in downtown, do a tour and tasting at Oconee Brewing Company, the newest addition to town, just opening in May. The craft brewery can be found in a renovated mill next to the local Farmers Feed and Seed store.

If you are looking for somewhere to stay during your visit, luxury by the lake can be found at The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee. The resort is home to an award-winning spa, where you could easily lose yourself for the day. Guests of the hotel are also able to play on the five world class golf courses offered at Reynolds Lake Oconee. For a truly unique experience, have a custom club fitting at Reynolds Kingdom of Golf Presented by Taylormade, one of only two such facilities in the country.
