5 Within 50: Christmas Lights

By Joni Buford

If there’s one thing to know about this family, it’s that holiday traditions run deep. Growing up, nothing topped putting on some Christmas comfies, grabbing a cup of hot cocoa, cranking up the holiday tunes (I’m talking about you, “Dominick the Donkey”) and rolling out to see neighborhood displays. Today, even with kids in high school, cruising around for Christmas lights remains our non-negotiable December tradition. Luckily, Gwinnett is surrounded by incredible displays just a short drive away. Turn on the seat warmers, grab your Christmas jammies and prep your playlist for five of the best light spots within 50 miles.

1. Ashebrooke Night of Lights

5020 Luke Dr, Cumming, GA 30040

Over 300 homes in this Cumming neighborhood transform into a glowing winter wonderland each December. Drive through nightly from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. to catch synchronized light shows, massive inflatables and over-the-top setups. Visit during their annual “Night of Lights” event on the third Sunday of December, when residents raise funds for local families. It blends some of our favorite displays with true community heart.

Starting at 5:00 p.m. nightly, this drive-through route offers continuous illuminated scenes that bring instant nostalgia. Perfect for date night, a crew outing or a family tradition, it’s a classic North Georgia experience everyone will love.

Spanning over two miles of decorated streets, neighbors deck out their lawns with creative setups and bright installations. Enter off Kilgore Road to start at the beginning of the neighborhood and cruise side streets in order for a smooth, continuous trip.

4. Historic Dahlonega Town Square

Hello, Hallmark! Truly, our favorite Christmas town experience is right there in Dahlonega. Thousands of white lights illuminate the historic town square, anchored by a magnificent two-story Christmas tree. Grab a hot cocoa, stroll the glowing sidewalks and soak up the magical atmosphere.
