Sugo: Where Family Legacy Meets Incredible Plates

While not located in Gwinnett, Sugo is an outstanding restaurant that should be on everyone’s foodie bucket list. It’s a family-style eatery that specializes in authentic Italian and Greek dishes, blending the owner’s own heritage. There’s a unique ambiance to the establishment where everyone feels welcome, whether you’re there for a romantic date night, a family outing, a celebration or just a casual conversation over lunch.

The legacy of Sugo begins when the owner Federico II’s parents, Arcito Castellucci, an Italian-born man and Sophia Zavanlagos, a woman from Sparta, Greece, met and fell in love. After getting married in 1947, they had Federico II or Mr. C. for short and moved to the United States, where his father opened a restaurant called Archie’s Tavern in Rhode Island. This is where Mr. C learned the tricks of the restaurant trade from his father’s business. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the restaurant, leading Mr. C to help build it up again from scratch to preserve the legacy of the family business. After successfully building the business up again, he went on to open 6 other restaurants in the state. In 1996, Mr. C moved with his family to Atlanta, leading to the opening of Sugo in 2003. Since then, this establishment has been a pivotal fixture in the area, known for its welcoming atmosphere, delicious plates and craft cocktails.

For this week’s Foodie Friday, we’ve decided to highlight the beef ravioli from the menu, a classic savory pasta dish that is always a crowd pleaser. Featuring braised short rib, veal demi, mushrooms, parmesan gremolata and parmigiano-reggiano, this is truly a decadent and tasty pasta to enjoy with a hearty glass of red wine. What sets Sugo’s entrees apart from other establishments is the quality of ingredients, which adds a sense of freshness to the plate. It’s also a testament to Mr.C’s Italian and Greek roots, a unique combination not often found at Mediterranean spots in the area.

If you find yourself craving something savory and packed full of flavor this Foodie Friday, head over to Sugo to get a taste of their impeccable menu. They have a variety of options, including vegetarian and gluten-free plates, so there’s truly something for everyone to enjoy!
