Sips & Sunshine

You know those places where you feel totally at home, but also like you’ve slipped away on a little vacation? That’s Cloudland Winery. Cloudland was founded in 2015 by owner and winemaker Sean Wilborn, but Sean has been working behind the scenes on this passion project since 2009. Located just a stone’s throw outside of Gwinnett, this Buford vineyard and winery opened to the public in October of 2020, and the rave reviews haven’t stopped pouring in since.

According to the Cloudland team, “Cloudland is a philosophy as much as a vineyard and winery. We believe in farming grapes made for our region, so our wine is as pure as our agriculture.” And that philosophy has paid off. Cloudland was recognized by the Georgia Trustees Wine and Spirit organization for “best red wine made from non-European grapes” for their 2019 Lomanto. Lomanto is a hybrid grape that grows against all odds in the Georgia climate and produces delicious wine!

The beautiful, almost 10-acre site, which sits at a unique 1300′ elevation in the Lake Lanier Highlands, is a must-see on its own; Add in delicious wine, live music and food trucks, and you might just become a regular (like we have!). The grounds at Cloudland are built for the ultimate outdoor experience. The tasting room is located inside a small building with some serious Joanna Gaines vibes, and seating is spread around throughout the grounds. If you’re new to Cloudland or new to wine, we suggest doing a tasting. You’ll get to enjoy a variety of wines with expert guidance from the Cloudland team while figuring out what you love! After you’ve got your glass (or bottle, no judgment here!), you’ll head outside to find the perfect place to sit back and sip. Large umbrellas provide shade in the hot summer months, and firepits scattered throughout the property ensure a cozy visit in the winter.

If live music is your thing, be sure to visit on Fridays and Saturdays, where you’ll find a great lineup of artists from 5 – 8 p.m. Cloudland does have some small plates and snacks for purchase, but if you’re bringing your appetite with you, plan your visit for a Saturday where you’ll be met with the tantalizing aroma of food truck fare.

If you haven’t made your way out to Cloudland Vineyards & Winery yet, then this is your sign! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is one of a kind. Forget everything you think you know about Georgia-grown wine and go play outside and Cloudland!
