Eagles, raptors and waterfowl, oh my! There’s nothing more wild than spending a day at the Georgia Southern Wildlife Education Center to get an inside look at some of Georgia’s interesting wildlife. At this leading center for environmental education, you can explore engaging exhibits and daily wildlife programs to learn more about the unique species living among us.
The center opened its doors in 1997 and is located on Georgia Southern University’s campus. We recommend printing out the printable map for directions when finding the center to make navigating the area easier. Admission into the center is very inexpensive, with adult prices set at four dollars and children, students, senior citizens and military prices at two dollars. After handling parking and tickets, the real fun awaits with exploring the center!
Home to an impressive assortment of wildlife including eagles, raptors, reptiles, amphibians, waterfowl & wading birds, and mammals, your day is sure to be packed! Current exhibits on display that you can experience include the Down to Earth Encounter, Raptor Walkway, the Children’s Discovery Trail and the Invasive Species Exhibit. Starting with the Down to Earth Encounter, you interact by locating native species that are hidden on display. This building is also home to snakes, American alligators and turtles for you to look at. Raptor Walkway and the Children’s Discovery Trail are outdoor exhibits with the walkway highlighting raptors native to Georgia such as the bald eagle and screech owl while the trail teaches you about natural artifacts and highlights the Virginia opossum and striped skunk. Heading back indoors, the Invasive Species Exhibit includes interactive quizzes, hands-on displays and a 15-foot Burmese python.
After walking through the exhibits and learning more about the beautiful creatures that the center looks after, taking a walk around the Waterfowl Pond is a must. This pond is home to 100 ducks and is the largest walk-in aviary in the southeast region. There’s something so relaxing about being outside and seeing the ducks swim around and interact with each other. To round out your day trip at the center, Freedom’s General Store is the perfect place to purchase your own plush replica of Freedom the bald eagle or a fun t-shirt to remember your day!
