The James Beard Foundation announced that Rui Liu, chef at Masterpiece in Duluth, is a semifinalist for the Best Chef: Southeast award. Masterpiece is a Sichuan Chinese restaurant located at 3940 Buford Highway. The awards recognize the top chefs, bakers and restaurants around the U.S.; semifinalists were chosen from more than 20,000 online entries. The finalists will be announced on March 14th. Chef Liu is one of 20 semifinalists for the Best Chef: Southeast award and a panel of 600 restaurant critics, food and wine editors, culinary educators and previous award winners will narrow the field to five finalists before selecting a winner.
