Feeling like indulging in a delicious sweet treat on this Foodie Friday? Look no further than Berens Frozen Custard, which recently opened a location in Downtown Lawrenceville! You can completely customize your custard with their selection of toppings, giving you the perfect excuse to come back and try new frozen custard combinations
The original Berens Frozen Custard opened its doors in 1976 after Don Berens, who was an engineer, decided he wanted to bring his childhood love of frozen custard to Atlanta. He opened the first frozen custard shop and since then, it’s been a favorite amongst those with a sweet tooth. Fast forward through the decade and Don opened up three locations while also winning awards for his celebrated dessert. He soon consolidated his stores and focused on catering for special events to let him have more time to spend with his family and go golfing. After retiring and then passing away in 2005, his son decided to take over the business with his wife, Debbie and his two sons named Matthew and Jacob. He opened his first shop in 2010, continuing his father’s legacy and love for making frozen custard. Their Grayson location is still open and now they’ve expanded to Lawrenceville, bringing their delicious menu to the downtown square! The Lawrenceville location has that perfectly retro feel inside, with plenty of seating inside and outside to enjoy your frozen custard.
For those who haven’t had frozen custard before, it’s a much richer form of ice cream. It contains more egg yolks and is churned to not let as much air in, so you get a thicker and more decadent frozen treat. At Berens, they offer a chocolate and vanilla custard base for you to choose from. They offer a pre-set menu along with a monthly schedule of specialty custard bases that you can try on select days. From vanilla chai tea and ube to butter pecan and blueberry cheesecake, these flavors of the day options are truly out of this world! For their set menu, you can get a cup or cone with this base and then choose your selection of toppings. They have it all, from marshmallow sauce and cookie dough pieces to blueberries and everything else in between! You can also choose to get a concrete mixer from their menu, which offers pre-set flavor combinations like The Grasshopper, which is your choice of custard blended with Oreos, Andes Mints and a splash of mint. They also offer pints of leftover flavor of the day icecreams for sale in their refrigerated section, ice cream sandwiches and hot fudge sundaes in case you want more options!
While you can’t go wrong when making your selection, we tried a cup of their vanilla custard with fresh raspberries and Oreo, and it was incredible! This flavor combination is the perfect balance between fruit, raspberry and rich chocolatey Oreo, perfectly balanced by the vanilla custard. Give it a try and let us know your thoughts!
