Fernbank Museum's Flight of Butterflies Exhibit

Discover Fernbank’s Flight of Butterflies Exhibit

As Georgia’s monarch migration season comes to a close, we invite our fellow butterfly enthusiasts to lower their gaze from the skies to the woods. More specifically, to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s latest exhibit: Flight of Butterflies. As you leave behind the wonders of the Fernbank Museum and enter WildWoods’ oasis of forest, see if you can spot a butterfly, or perhaps see if you can spot a seven-foot-tall butterfly! Scattered across the elevated walkway are 25 spectacular butterfly sculptures, each conveying a story of metamorphosis and inspiring champions of nature.

Each artist had a distinct take on these themes. With splashes of blue and orange, one butterfly warns us of the impact climate change has on migratory species. Another butterfly bears a honeycomb pattern to honor the wisdom found in pollinators. Many artists dedicated their butterflies to conveying their own migration experiences, moving across countries and cultures. Others drew inspiration from species either common to Georgia or threatened, like the eastern tiger swallowtail and the regal fritillary. As you meander through the miles of trails, each statue will offer you a unique story, reflecting the diverse artistry behind it.

The exhibit opened on March 14 and will remain on display until June 7. This outdoor experience is perfect for families, couples or solo adventurers! If you are a lover of all things nature and art, then this exhibit is for you. Grab your camera and see if you can spot all twenty-five sculptures and take a fun photo op, where you can pose with your own set of monarch butterfly wings.
