DiG Deep: Playtown Suwanee 2.0

In 2004, over 1,000 Suwanee community members came together for five days to build the playground now known as PlayTown Suwanee. Now, the city of Suwanee is gearing up to do it again!

Build out of the new playground, which will also be a community effort, is expected to start this fall on the same site as the original Playtown Suwanee. Along with a helping hand from Leather and Associates, the designer behind the first Playtown Suwanee, the city is recruiting volunteers to join the construction effort. Suwanee invites all residents and community members to partake; think of it as a gift to the future generations of one of Gwinnett’s many vibrant communities!

“We need volunteers of ALL abilities and interests!” said PlayTown co-chair Colette Grodzicki. “Whether you are a construction expert, a little bit handy or have never even held a hammer, we’ve got a way for you to be involved in a truly impactful project.”

As Suwanee preps for construction, safety for volunteers and future playground users is a top priority. All designs created by Leather and Lace will meet or exceed ASTM International Playground Safety Standards, CPSC Safety Guidelines and ADA. After completion, the playground will be inspected and certified according to all guidelines above. The community can rest assured that the safety of their little ones is at the center of this project.

Though the new playground promises to be unique from its predecessor, many of the original elements will make a resurgence in a new way. Like most things in Suwanee, the new playground will reflect its city in its special features and character. Playtown Suwanee 2.0 also promises to be eco-friendly, using long-lasting, recycled materials for the framework.

Not to mention, the city is consulting with top playground experts for inspiration: kids! In fact, the design team has already visited a host of local classrooms and elementary schools to get input before construction begins. Their current design plan pulls from all the feedback gathered during these sessions.

Overall, Playtown Suwanee promises to be a safe, inclusive community centerpiece to be enjoyed by children and parents alike for years to come.
