DAY TRIP: DRAGON CON

By

A Full Labor Day Weekend of Ultimate Fandom

The 31st Annual Dragon Con Showcase returns to Atlanta Thursday, August 30 through Monday, September 3, bringing together gamers, comic book enthusiasts, cosplayers, and more! The special guests list started filling up as early as January this year, and includes an incredible variety: biochemists to Emmy Awardwinning actors and (quite literally) everything in between.
The history of Dragon Con dates back to 1987 when a group of superfans just wasn’t satisfied with the one-category conventions they had attended for specific shows or comics. They wanted to create an opportunity for fandoms of all genres to come together and celebrate all of their varying interests, and that’s exactly what they did! Attendance has grown from 1,200 in the inaugural year to over 100,000 attendees annually, filling the Atlanta streets and hotels for over 30 years!

Start your day with the annual Dragon Con Parade, a staple opening ceremony for many attendees of this iconic event. As one of Atlanta’s largest attended parades, the Dragon Con Parade offers fans an opportunity to show off and admire costumes of all organizations and fandoms. Interested in participating? Visit the Dragon Con website for an application, and enter your Facebook fan group, float, cosplay organization, or just yourself.

After the parade, stick around for scheduled autograph sessions, the Dragon Con Burlesque Performance: A Glamour Geek Revue, the Guest of Honor Awards Banquet, live performances by popular bands and DJs, a special night at the Georgia Aquarium, reading sessions, The Late Night Puppet Slam, video and film active rooms, and even some wrestling.

Dragon Con has been the site location of various gamer competitions as well as milestone impromptu sci-fi announcements, so who knows what this year’s event will have in store! Ticket options are up to your own discretion with day passes, vendor passes and much more. For more information and lists of featured guests visit www.DragonCon.org. Happy Conning!
