Day Trip: Athens Beer Trail

By

The Classic City of Athens has certainly made a name for themselves this past year. However, while many may know the city as the home of the 2022 NCAA National Champions, Athens is also known by another name: The All-American Beer Town. The eccentric city has 6 craft breweries, many of which are recent additions. The next time you find yourself making a trip to Athens, set aside some time to complete the Athens Beer Trail, a tour of the city’s breweries. Whether you find yourself traveling to Athens for sports, school or leisure, one thing’s for sure: beer can only make a good time better.

Before you get started on the tour, head to the Historic Athens Welcome Center and pick up a copy of the Athens Beer Trail Field Guide. Not only does the guide come with a map of the Athens breweries, it also includes background on each brewery, fun facts about all things craft beer and a passport-like stamp system that will earn you a prize once you visit each brewery. After ordering a brew, be sure to have each brewery stamp your Field Guide as proof that you visited each stop.

The best part about the Beer Trail is your stamps won’t expire! So if you aren’t able to hit every brewery on your day trip to Athens, bring your Field Guide along on your next trip and try a new brewery. Once you’ve visited all of the breweries listed in the guide, visit the Historic Athens Welcome Center any day between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. for a prize (don’t worry, it’s beer related) and recognition as an official member of the #AthensBrewCrew.

And don’t forget, there’s far more to Athens than beer! Along with brewery hopping, spend your day trip exploring UGA’s beautiful campus, enjoying a Georgia Bulldog Game, getting outside and exploring a nature trail, browsing eclectic shops downtown and so much more. And of course, nothing pairs better with an ice cold craft beer than delicious local food.

What are you waiting for? Grab your favorite pint glass, head to Athens and start collecting those stamps already!
