As we all know America recently celebrated its 250th anniversary, but our country isn’t the only one with a big birthday this year. Duluth is turning 150 years old, and they’re going all out. The Big 150: Off the Rails will be a celebration to remember, and you’re invited! Now if you’re unfamiliar with Duluth history, then you might be scratching your head over the event’s train-themed name and artwork. Allow me to give you some background!
The land where Duluth now resides has a long history of being a crucial crossroads for the Cherokee Indians, settlers and eventually railroad system. In 1821, Evan Howell, Duluth’s forefather, established a town called Howell Crossing, where he took on the task of building a road to connect the Chattahoochee River and Peachtree Road. Howell’s grandson, Evan P. Howell continued his vision of expanding transportation, when Congress enacted a bill to fund a railroad connecting Duluth, Minnesota and Howell Crossing, Georgia. Howell renamed the city to Duluth to honor its place in connecting the North and South by train.
With your newfound knowledge on the history of Duluth, you’re ready to celebrate, so here’s the details! The Big 150: Off the Rails is being held on Saturday, September 12. It kicks off at 2 p.m. with local music, carnival games, food trucks and family-friendly activities. Then at 6:30 p.m. The Smithereens will take to the main stage, followed by the headliner, Grand Funk Railroad, at 8:30 p.m., filling the evening with some rocking tunes. Grab your friends and family and enjoy a day full of playing games, eating local dishes and celebrating 150 years of Duluth, a community dedicated to bringing people together.
